King Athur : the Druid

The DrThe developers at Neocore Games have delivered yet another point of view to the story of King Arthur, this one more concerned to the Old Faith and the old customs that seem to be dying under the assault of Christianity, Saxon rulers and a new order, where mysticism is banished and the heroes of old times are overcome by rigorously trained newcomers.

uids is significant because it allows the gamer to enjoy playing as some of the toughest enemies he faced in the original King Arthur campaign and because they manage to add some new features that, once used at least one, seem crucial to the whole system, like the new diplomatic relations and the extended interactions with non-factional characters.

Gameplay

Largely, the formula in The Druids is the same as that of the original and The Saxons expansion, with season-based turns defining the strategic layer while battles between two armies are delivered via real time strategy mechanics that are similar to those of Total War.

The battles are thoroughly enjoyable and engaging from a tactical standpoint. Survivability is still the key in the battle design of the people at Neocore Games, meaning that I often threw inexperienced troops en masse at an enemy in order to conserve my more upgraded veterans, who had endured the most difficult part of the battle earlier. The battle system often leads to situations where casualty tables are pretty close, but where one side gains a significant advantage because of the forces it manages to conserve for another day.

It's nice to use the sometimes too capable warriors of the Welsh, like the Springborn and the very good archers, but make sure to play at least on Normal and, better yet, on Hard, in order to get a sense of challenge, especially if you are a veteran of this subgenre of the strategy world.

One knock against The Druids is that I felt less of a connection to anything that happened to my characters and my heroes than when playing with Arthur himself and with the Knights of the Round Table in the initial campaign. King Arthur – The Role Playing Wargame is a good looking game even if it doesn't aim for the huge diversity that has become the calling card for the Total War series with Empire and Napoleon. The units that fight it out on the battlefield offer details where variety is lacking and the animations might be a bit crude at times, but the player will spend most of its battle time zoomed out and directing wide tactical moves, not zoomed in and watching two heroes slug it out for a few minutes.

There are some areas that are truly impressive, like the effects for some of the spells, with Storm of Avalon the real highlight (although it can make actually directing the battle a bit harder), and the strategic map is lush and alive, able to make the player at home in this fantastic version of Britannia.

The game could benefit from a better control system for adjusting the angle of the camera and from more visual cues to help the gamer distinguish units when zoomed out completely.

The developers at Neocore Games get bonus points for their attention to detail, especially the big amounts of flavor text that are linked to locations, spells, characters and side quests. Be warned that some of the longer texts can be a bit tough to read because they sometimes need to be cramped in small screen spaces.

3. Create a backup of the the "chest.sacred2chest" file in the "C:\Users\[username]\Saved Games\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred 2\" directory in Windows Vista or "\Documents and Settings\[username]\Saved Games\Ascaron Entertainment\Sacred 2\" directory in Windows XP.
4. Start the game again.
5. Take the items you want to sell out of the chest.
6. Quit the game, and return to the desktop.
7. Copy your backup "chest.sacred2chest" file to the saved game folder again, overwriting the current file at that location.
8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 until your inventory is full.
9. Start the game.
10. Take the items, and put them into the chest under "All Characters".
11. Quit the game, and return to the desktop.
12. Create a backup of the "chest.sacred2chest" file that has the items in the "All Characters" slot.
13. Start the game, take the items out of your chest, then sell them.
14. Quit the game, and overwrite the empty "chest.sacred2chest" file with the backup you just made. Repeat all steps until you get the desired amount of gold.

Hint: Zerg Queen Quick Larval Injection

BACKSPACE is used to cycle through your species's command center. For the Zerg player, this is handy since each queen needs to "do stuff" with larvae.

What I do is bind BACKSPACE (or the cycle command center function) to one of my extra mouse buttons and speed up the process.

(1) Select all queens with control group

(2) Hold down inject larvae hotkey

(3) Press BACKSPACE to jump between each hatch, and click that hatch. This will use the closest queen to cast inject larvae, without having to press inject larvae each time

Easter Egg: Marines

Marines can be found in various places in the single player campaign.

• On the mission "Havens Fall," search the bottom left corner near the refugees. Just before the bottom left Zerg base in the water is a Marine frozen in "carbonite."
• On the mission "Zero Hour," where you wait 20 minutes for evacuation, search the top of the map, just above the left vespene geiser. Here you can find a Tauren Space Marine. He will enter an outhouse -- if you click it 3 times it will shoot into space, unlocking that level's secret.
• On the mission "Welcome to the Jungle," you can find a Murloc Marine near the left edge of the map. He's slightly north of your base. He is standing on a cliff edge, surrounded by trees.
• During the mission "Piercing the Shroud," in the loading bay before the room with the Brutalisk, go outside through the door and follow the rock ledge upwards. A large area of the map will be suddenly revealed, and you will find a Murloc Marine. This is a reference to Murlocs in Warcraft. The Murloc Marine is also found in World of Warcraft as a exclusive companion given to those who attended BlizzCon 2009.
• Inside the sercret mission unlocked via destroying the Science Facility on Korhol (which can be unlocked in replays btw), send a unit as far as you can at the drop point when you get reinforcements (outside, not entering the brutalisk room first). Here you can see a Murloc Marine just minding it's own buisness on a nearby asteroid.

# Extra Peasants

Use the following trick to get a lot of extra Peasants (more than the campfire limit of 24) for buying whatever kind of forces you need from the Mercenary Post or Barracks. For example, put your Quarries (3 Peasants each) and Oxen to sleep. There will be that many more in your available amount when buying Swordsman or something else. Then just turn them back on when you are done and they will go back to work. This works if you do not want to wait until your Peasants fill up your campfire again, or you just need them immediately.
# Food management

It is easier to build, manage, and supply Inns rather than food because ale lasts longer. You can use the extra available farm space to build wheat fields and mills to make flour. Once you have flour, you can sell it for a profit or you can make bread and raise your taxes.
# Selling weapons

You can sell crossbows for more than just wood and can sell swords for more than raw iron.
# Archers

It is cheaper to buy archer bows and make Archers out of your barracks than it is to hire them from the mercenary post. They both have the same attack rate, defense rate, movement speed, and range.
# General tips

If your having a difficult time completing a level, try the following tips:

Try building the basic castle needs, such as a Marketplace, Mercenary Post, Granary, Stockpiles, and Industry Buildings, then save there. It is easier to start at that point, in case your placement of some walls or towers do not work well.

Pause the game whenever you can to save time. It is very important to build faster than the enemy.

Keep your money making resources (Food, Rocks, Iron, Pitch, or Weapons) protected, or put walls around them to keep them safe. Capitalize on them whenever you can.

Create layers of walls around or in front of important towers and other targets that the enemy likes to knock down.

Horse archers are very useful in this game, especially when aggressing enemy castles with Mongonels to help put big holes in enemy walls and a few swordsman as guard dogs.

By immediately placing a group of Woodmans Huts around a enemy base, then putting them to sleep, you will block the area and prevent him from building Barracks or a Mercenary Camp. It costs a lot of Wood, but it means they cannot make any troops and therefore very easy to defeat. Note: This does not work on the pig.

When attacking a castle, concentrate on the enemy Barracks. Once destroyed, try to block it from being rebuilt by placing troops over its remains. Again, it makes the enemy easier to defeat without it producing more troops.

The Ballista is good at holding positions far from the security of your home base. Get a group of about eight built, with approximately twenty Archers and stick a couple Trebuchets in the middle of them. The Trebuchets can attack the enemy castle well protected. If needed, you can always take the six Engineers from them to make three more Ballista when the enemy counterattacks. Ballista are also great at taking out enemy troops on the castle walls, especially fire throwers.

On several levels there is very little farm land, but you always find at least one resource available (Stone or Iron). Concentrate on the mining and sell it at the market for Food.

Have both Archers and Crossbowmen on Towers (five each) for a good defense. Add a Ballista on the Tower to make it better as they have a huge range and can even hit attacking Trebuchets.

To protect farms, etc. outside your walls, build a Tower and a Gate next to each other. This allows you to put Archers in and have them protected from enemy soldiers entering the Tower. You could also destroy stairs to the tower once they are in, as an other option.

Pikemen are the best troops due to the combination of speed, defense and attack. Knights are far too slow to attack with, but make great defenders.

In the most difficult levels when the enemy comes at you very early, try to set up a trap. Build strong walls around your land except in one area. Leave an opening and have as many troops as possible covering that area. The enemy often ignore the undefended walls and go for your "weak spot'" Instead, they walk in to a wall of Ballista, Archer, and crossbow fire; and a few Knights for good measure. Do not forget your Lord is also a superb fighter that also can be used.

It is all a matter of timing. Organize waves of attacking troops, attack with one group, then send in reinforcements. When blocking the enemy from rebuilding its Barracks, your troops will not last long. While they do the blocking, have other sets attacking.

# Knocking out guards

To knock out a guard without using a Sticky Shocker or a Air Foil, shoot a Sticky Cam at their head. Note: It must hit him directly in the head for the guard to get knocked out.
# Stealth

To move quieter, crouch down and walk slower. This will make your steps softer, and keep you undetected to a limit. To decrease your chances of being seen, shoot out the lights with your gun. Be careful, as if there is an enemy is under that light they may see you shooting it out.
# Level select

When you complete the game on the normal or hard difficulty setting, when you go back into the game make sure you go over towards the level select instead of checkpoints. You could lose your data and have to do it over again if the wrong choice is made.
# Defeating Norman Soth

After you have climbed up the elevator cables and have gotten on top of the other elevator, crawl through the hole in the wall. Norman Soth and two other mercenaries are on the top pathways. While in the hole, there will be one guard on the top path, slightly to the right. You should be able to shoot him in the head. Then, a timer will start and you will have one minute to kill Norman Soth and his other mercenary. When you shoot the first mercenary, drop out of the hole onto the first pathway. The second mercenary will go to exactly where the you shot the first mercenary. Shoot the second mercenary in the head. Note: The second guard will be aiming at the hole, so he will not see you if you drop out of the hole. The last person to kill is Normon Soth. Start running down the pathway and turn left on the second to last walkway on the left. Look up and turn on your thermal vision. You will see Normon Soth. Get a clear shot and shoot him in the head. After that you must retrieve the smallpox box from the top pathway. If you are on the second to last pathway on the left, go up the ladder. There will be another ladder; use it to climb up. Drop off the ledge onto the pathway. Run down the middle pathway to find the smallpox box.
# Capturing Suhadi Sadono

After killing off all of Sadono's guards, lure him into a dark corner then shoot him with a Ring Airfoil. Then, run up behind him and grab him. You can now force him to use the retinal scanner and complete the mission. Also, rather than picking off each one of the bodyguards, you can go to the right all the way around the room in the shadows. You should then reach the stage behind Sadono. Follow the curtain's shadow to Sadono. There will be a gap. Stand up and run until you see the "Grab Character" option appear. Grab him. You will be shot at and probably get hit, but once you grab him they will stop and you will hear someone say "Don't shoot, you might hurt Sadono". After that you are home free as they will not follow you.
# Prince Of Persia references

On the mission when you are on the train, look in the second car where the guard is located. Knock him out then go behind the fenced door. Look down you will see a magazine featuring Prince Of Persia. Also on the third level when you are in Paris on the train, at the beginning there will be a room with an engineer. Knock him out. On the floor of the room is a Prince Of Persia strategy guide.
# Various references

On the first half of the Jerusalem level, there is a book store directly behind an alley with a swinging lamp. Next to it is another smaller alley with a swinging lamp. If you look inside the large window you can see many different picture references to The Punisher, Ubi Soft's XIII, an anime, and a picture of the infamous "Sniper Kitty" among many other things. Use the binoculars to get a much better look.
